Guatemala: Finca El Carmen

Juan Mejia’s farm is in Acetenango with a growing elevation of 6000 feet. The farm originally belonged to Juan’s grandfather in the 1930s, Don Mateo, who is said to be the pioneer of coffee production in Acatenango.

Over the years they have decided to grow a heavy amount of the Typica varietal in a region dominated by Bourbon and Caturra in order to experiment with cup quality and yield. Experimenting with different cultivars or varietals also opens up the possibility of some dynamic micro-lots which net the farmer a higher price.

Our lot this year is a 100% Yellow Catuai lot - very well-structured; a big body and very creamy with subtle cranberry, hibiscus tea, spiced pecan, and chocolate.
