Kenya: Muramuki Kathangariri

The Kathangariri factory, as wet mills are known in Kenya, is the only factory operated by the Muramuki FCS (Farmer's Cooperative Society). These farmers in Embu, southeast of Mt. Kenya in the center of the country, split off from a larger FCS in 2000 for more independence and to strive for higher quality. Many coffees from Kenya that we seek out come from regions immediately around Mt. Kenya where the soil is extremely rich and water is more abundant, such as this Embu or recent coffees from Kirinyaga and Nyeri.

This lot is compromised of the famous Scott Laboratories decedents of Bourbon, SL-28 and SL-34, bred to be drought resistant in addition to their phenomenal cup quality. The farmers live in close proximity to the washing station, and the cherries are processed using fresh stream water, leading to great cup clarity. The FCS also offsets some costs by leasing some land out to a banking concern, increasing the farmers earnings on top of the high price they are able to get at auction.

Grown at up to 1700 meters above sea level, the sweetness really illustrates in this cup, especially as a Kalita Wave pourover. Notes of Chocolate, Lavender, Tropical Fruit, Kiwi, Papaya, Grapefruit, Coconut.
