Bird Rock Coffee Roasters is a seasonal coffee roaster, offering single-origin beans that change throughout the year based upon the harvests of theses various coffee-producing countries.
While one of our favorite origins, coffee from Yemen can be spotty at best: at times, fantastic and unique but usually disappointing and defective.
This lot is from the same exporters we bought coffee from last year and the year before. For this lot, the exporters have gone to great lengths to offer a supreme coffee experience. Traditionally, coffee from Yemen is sold as dried cherries that have been dried on the rooftops of small scale farmers' homes. Consistency, then, is usually a problem.
For this lot, the exporters paid farmers a high rate to deliver uniformly ripe cherries to a centralized drying station where the cherries were dried on Kenyan beds and carefully monitored. The results of the effort show up in the cup: Dried strawberry, honeydew melon, coconut, creamy and rather dense-bodied.
Many assume coffee from Yemen tastes like a dry processed coffee from Ethiopia, but that is not the case. While both coffees share some flavor characteristics, compared with an expertly prepped natural from Sidamo, good coffee from Yemen is more wild in the cup and perhaps a tad rustic, though not dirty -- just a little more challenging and perhaps interesting. Very limited supply.
This is currently a featured coffee on our pour-over bar so if you come into the coffee bar you can give it a try.
